As in other markets, the vast majority of consumers are buying adult-use marijuana. Adult-use cannabis sales totaled $1.3 billion, the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services (DHSS) reported.
The state launched adult-use sales in February 2023 and has seen strong growth since then.
Missouri’s legal cannabis sales generated a record-breaking $255.57 million in sales tax revenue last year. State governments received $151.72 million, while local jurisdictions that have a licensed store in their community received $103.84 million.
“By purchasing from a legal, regulated dispensary, Missourians are helping generate hundreds of millions in revenue each year, which supports local communities, veterans and helps balance the budget,” Andrew Mullins, executive director of the Missouri Cannabis Trade Association (MoCannTrade), said in a press release.
“One hundred percent of the cannabis in Missouri dispensaries is grown right here in Missouri, generating record-breaking sales, creating thousands of jobs and delivering hundreds of millions in tax revenue to support essential programs.”
The DHSS has issued nearly 400 licenses for cultivation, manufacturing facilities and retailers, according to the Missouri Independent.
The state has more than 193 licensed dispensaries, according to the Missouri State Information System.
Eventually, the state will authorize 144 microbusiness licenses to benefit disadvantaged business owners.
